LINCOLN, Neb. – Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders was candid about his team's performance following their first loss of the season, a 28-10 defeat against Nebraska on Saturday night. Sanders expressed frustration with his team’s inability to get their offense back on track, particularly after a lackluster first half that saw them shut out and struggle against the Cornhuskers’ defense.
Colorado Struggles with Offense and Protection
In a game where Colorado (1-1) fell behind early, Sanders was critical of his team's execution. The Buffaloes, who had defeated Nebraska 36-14 in the previous season, were quickly overwhelmed, trailing 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. A pivotal moment came when quarterback Shedeur Sanders threw an interception from his own end zone, which Nebraska cornerback Tommi Hill returned for a 7-yard touchdown. Sanders described the mistake as a “rookie mistake” and noted that his team ran just 11 plays in the first quarter for a net gain of minus-2 yards.
"The way we started is just not indicative of who we are," Deion Sanders said. "And we just never got it together."
Offensive Line Issues and Rushing Game Failures
Colorado’s offensive struggles were compounded by significant issues with protection. Shedeur Sanders was sacked five times and finished the game with 244 passing yards on 23-of-38 completions, including one touchdown and one interception. The Buffaloes also struggled with the run game, amassing only 16 rushing yards and failing to convert two crucial fourth-and-1 attempts.
Sanders acknowledged the offensive line's deficiencies, stating, “Protections were a problem. We gotta figure out a way to prevent that and do a better job with that.” The Buffaloes had finished last in the FBS in rushing yards in 2023, and despite rebuilding the offensive line with transfer portal additions, the run game continued to falter.
Nebraska's Defensive Dominance and Unlucky Breaks
Nebraska’s defense was a major factor in Colorado’s inability to find their rhythm. The Buffaloes trailed 28-0 at halftime after Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola connected with running back Rahmir Johnson for an 18-yard touchdown. The play was marked by a fortunate bounce when a near-interception by Colorado linebacker LaVonta Bentley led to Johnson’s score.
“When stuff like that happens, you just gotta take your hat off and say, 'Oh Lord, it's not our day, baby,'" Sanders said. “That was crazy. Heck of a play.”
Despite their offensive woes, Colorado's defense held Nebraska scoreless in the second half and forced five consecutive punts. However, penalties and a blocked field goal attempt further hindered their efforts to mount a comeback.
Looking Ahead
With the loss, the Buffaloes are now focused on regrouping as they prepare for their next challenge. Colorado will face in-state rival Colorado State on the road next Saturday, a team that pushed the Buffaloes to overtime in 2023. The Buffaloes will then return to Big 12 conference play on September 21 against Baylor.
“We have a tremendous offense,” Deion Sanders said. “We should be able to move the ball on anyone. We should be able to protect with the experience that we have offensively. We just couldn't get it going today.”
As the Buffaloes navigate one of the toughest schedules in the conference, Sanders and his team will need to address their offensive imbalances and improve their overall performance to stay competitive in the season ahead.nebraska football
