Authorities are actively searching for Joseph A. Couch, 32, of Woodbine, KY, who is a suspect in a recent mass shooting on Interstate 75 in Laurel County. Couch, who is described as 5′10″ and 154 pounds, is considered armed and dangerous. Deputies advise the public not to approach him.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, when deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim on I-75 near exit 49. Upon arrival, they discovered nine vehicles had been shot into, with five individuals sustaining serious injuries. All five victims are reported to be stable, though three were flown out of St. Joseph London for further treatment.
Laurel County Sheriff John Root has identified Couch as a person of interest in this case. The Knox County Sheriff's Department has released his previous arrest photo from February 2024. Mayor Randall Weddle mentioned that authorities are focusing their search in a rural part of Laurel County and remain confident about his capture.
The search is being supported by Lexington police with aerial assistance. Officials assure residents of their safety due to the heavy police presence but urge them to remain vigilant and avoid the area. Both KY 909 and U.S. 25, along with the ramps of exit 49, are closed as the investigation continues.
