“Saturday Night Live” kicked off its 50th season with a star-packed cold open focused on the upcoming presidential election, humorously highlighting rallies from Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Maya Rudolph reprised her role as Harris, humorously comparing her campaign to Sabrina Carpenter’s hit song “Espresso,” saying, “the lyrics are vague but the vibes slap.”
Joining Rudolph were notable guest stars: Jim Gaffigan as Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, Andy Samberg as her husband Doug Emhoff, and Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden. Gaffigan brought laughs by playing up Walz's Minnesota charm, quipping in his cheerful accent, “This suit is from Costco. It’s a Kirkland brand. They make great dog food.”
Samberg chimed in with humor, stating, “I am proud to join the esteemed list of presidential spouses throughout history, women and men—but it’s all women.”
The other half of the sketch featured James Austin Johnson as Trump, who, during his rally, saw the crowd gradually dwindle as he droned on for three hours. Before introducing his running mate, Johnson quipped, “People are saying he’s a bad pick and in many ways he was.”
Bowen Yang appeared as Sen. JD Vance, delivering lines like, “How much do we love Donald Trump? Just this afternoon he told me, ‘JD, you’re like a son to me ‘cause I don’t like you and I’m stuck with you.’”
Jean Smart hosted the season premiere, with Jelly Roll providing the musical entertainment.
